D. I. Y
DISASTER
by Taliya Caddle
CHARACTERS
Lisette: An overachieving teenager who tries her best to get into Creative Visions Academy, the most prestigious art school around!
Rosie: An athlete who excels in running track. She always wins first place, but never gets overconfident as she supports her team with unrivaled sportsmanship!
D.I.Y DISASTER
(Rays of light enter the glass-stained windows, illuminating the white walls and parkwood floors of an art studio. A scrapbook lies in the center of a table. The peaceful vibe of solitude breaks from a suddenly opened door.)
( LISETTE barges in, frantically pacing around due to panic)
LISETTE
My project is due tonight, and it’s not even finished yet! I have to turn it in to get into a great art college. What do I do?
(Lisette tugs her hair, as her breathing gets heavier, trying to find a solution. Her eyes scan the room onto a scrapbook that is conveniently placed on a table.)
Perfect, this must be my lucky day. I could use these materials to finish the project!!
(Suddenly, Lisette heard purposeful footsteps thumping nearby, as if someone was searching for something)
ROSIE
(ROSIE appears from offstage, panting out of breath and pointing at the scrapbook that was now in Lisette’s hands)
Hey- *huff* Not so fast – *huff* You Thief!!
LISETTE
Who are you?!
ROSIE
I’m the owner of that scrapbook, and I want you to give it back!
LISETTE
(Lisette chuckles, almost amused at the thought)
Oh, and why should I? It technically isn’t stealing if I saw it without its owner, and it’s not my fault you can’t keep up with things.
Haven’t you heard of the saying “ finders keepers, losers weepers”?
ROSIE
I don’t care about stuff like that! I just want you to give it back!
LISETTE
NO!
ROSIE
(Rosie starts taking a different stance. Now fully recovered from running earlier, she rolls up her sleeves.)
Listen, girlie, this is the last time I’m going to ask you. Can you return the scrapbook to me, please?
LISETTE
I have a name, you know!
ROSIE
Well, you never told me your name
LISETTE
It’s Lisette
(LISETTE backs up slowly, distracting ROSIE while talking, and further increasing the gap between herself and ROSIE. She eventually hits against the back door of the studio and makes a run for it.)
LISETTE
I’ll give it back if you can catch me!!
ROSIE
(ROSIE sprints after her)
[SCENE CHANGE]
LISETTE
(LISETTE enters an empty room filled with all types of textiles and fabrics. She takes a breather and puts her weight on the back of the door.
*Huffs* I-I think I lost her
(LISETTE spoke too soon. Loud banging can be heard, accompanied by the door’s knob aggressively rattling as ROSIE tried entering the room. ROSIE overpowers LISETTE, the force strong enough to send LISETTE towards the ground. Unlike the other room, there’s only one exit)
(ROSIE confronts LISETTE. With nowhere to run, LISETTE tackles ROSIE to the ground. They both exchange blows, and conclude with ROSIE successfully grabbing the book from LISETTE.)
ROSIE
Finally, I got the book back!
(ROSIE starts to walk away)
LISETTE
Wait, please! I need the book. I need to get into the prestigious arts school.
(LISETTE feels her vision getting blurry as tears well up from the inside)
*Sobs* You don’t understand how much this means to me!
ROSIE
Neither do you understand why this scrapbook is so important to me! It has preserved memories of some of my past relatives! Yet, you want to use it for your own selfish objectives! How is that fair to me?!
LISETTE
I could ask you the same thing. I take time out of my day to make my portfolio competitive for admissions, just so I can get into Creative Visions Academy!!
ROSIE
Creative Visions Academy? That’s where my mother works!
LISETTE
(LISETTE’s eyes glow wide, believing that this moment was fate)
Really?! Do you think I could get in?
ROSIE
Not with that nasty attitude. My mother is the head of the admissions council. If I were to tell her everything that has transpired here, your chance would be over!
LISETTE
NO NO NO, please! Anything but that!
ROSIE
I’ll tell her!
LISETTE
NOOOOOO!
ROSIE
(Rosie triumphantly leaves the fashion studio with her scrapbook. LISETTE bawled her eyes out, knowing farewell, she ruined her shot at her dream school)
